The seasons come and go... another autumn in Michigan

"It looks like you haven't updated MichiganNative since 2006!" wrote one person who reached out to me about the site.

While not entirely true, what is true is that I never receive any truly original Michiganisms anymore, and so the Michigan Native site sits as a digital memorial to the Michigan Accent.

But there's obviously a huge desire for community around our great state. It's coming...don't get yer wolverines in a bunch.

In the meantime, some visual relief: Red Delicious apples on the tree at Robinette's Orchards, a Grand Rapids landmark.

Just saying hi! I am a "GranRapids" Michigan native, expat, living in Israel now. I had a great time reading the Michiganisms on Native. I had to get a tissue to wipe my eyes from the tears... hillarious! My husband is from NY and gives me such hell about the way I pronounce things. Anyway I have blog and flickr account which can be reached via my blog.

hey, I'm a Michigan native teaching English in Ukraine (peace corps) my co-English teachers at the High School like to give me trouble because of my pronounciation - I don't say things "American correct" or in the "British equivalent" that they would like. I think I'll send them to the guide you made.

Also - Ukraine pretty much looks like Michigan 50 years ago ...

Hi therrre! I jiss wannadasay thadaye really love yer site!

It's too bad you're lacking in the "spare time" department, as I think this site has incredible potential. Have you ever considered appointing a co-webmaster? Also, I think a user-contributed photo gallery would be a great thing. (Forgive me if there is one and I missed it.)

Havvuh good one!

Great ideas, Valerie, thanks for the comment! I agree: this could be blown up into something bigger and more of a community. And I would need help to do that. Are you volunteering? :)

I will step up my rethinking of MichiganNative.com and see what tools I might use to turn it into a full-fledged user community.

Hi Eric! Thanks for the reply.

I'd be more than willing to help out in expanding the MichiganNative site in any way I can, even if it means moderating a discussion board, etc. I also know many Michigan ex-pats from college and grad school, so I could interview them to get their perspectives on their handy home state.

Hello,

I am reading this, exactly one year after you posted it. Odd, Huh?

Anyways, I moved out of MI one year ago, and I really miss it, and it made me happy to be able to read this...plus it cleared up why and where my accent is coming from. I am a geologist in grad school, and people CAN NOT understand me when i say "rocks" or rahcks or som'n, which I find ironic.

Recently I went back to my hometown and had dinner with my old assistant principal, and it made me realize how caring, commited and cool the teachers and staff at my school were. Even though I'd been gone from the state for a long time, I felt...home.

So, anonymous, I can totally relate! :)

My insane work hours are abating and I hope to convert this website to a social network soon.

Love the picture of Robinette's! I haven't been able to get there for a fall harvest since I've started to go to school in Wisconsin... and boy what a difference the Lake makes!
